October: Fiction
October's challenge is to choose a book of fiction. Remember, fiction is any type of story that is not real.
At the end of October, you will need to post the following on your weebly. You will do these posts every month.
Part 1: This should be about half a page or so.
1) A brief description of the story. No spoilers please. Think about the stuff written on the back of books that gets a reader interested.
2) Invite other people to read your book. Who would it be good for? What did you like about it? What didn't you like about it? Be specific.
3) Create a rating scale and rate your book. This rating scale will be consistent throughout all of your posts this year.
Part 2:
October Focus: SKILLFUL SUMMARIZING
This month we want you to focus on your summarizing skills. That means you will prepare a detailed summary of the book that does include spoilers. It's ok; people may still want to read the book after reading/watching your excellent work. As well, your summary doesn't need to be huge. If you are writing it, think about 1.5 pages or so. If you are recording it, think about 3-4 minutes.
Your summary will need to include:
- major characters: describe the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s). What motivates them? What are some of their characteristics?
- plot: include setting and exposition, initial incident, rising action, climax, and denouement
- theme: what universal truth was explored in this novel? how did it connect to your own life and understanding?
You can post your information in any way that makes sense to you. If you want to do a youtube video, go for it. If you want to write, go for it. If you want to post a keynote, go for it. If you can think of a different way to do this, go for it.
